Spotlight: Changing Society One Person at a Time

Sherrill Moss

It's a rare organization whose primary goal is to make itself obsolete. Yet that's precisely the goal Sherrill Moss and 11 other men and women have set for themselves as the board of directors of the Women's Resource Center to End Domestic Violence.

It's been a little more than six years since Sherrill, a senior product manager at Verizon, first became involved with the Atlanta-based Women's Resource Center, a nonprofit organization devoted to ending domestic violence in the area. In that time, she has become a passionate advocate for the Center, helping it grow through her efforts on the board and working to increase recognition of the Center and its mission throughout the Atlanta area.

"I was at a point in my life where I wanted to get involved in a charitable organization, and I saw this as a way I could make a real impact," Sherrill said.

Sherrill's status as a Verizon employee makes an impact as well, as the company matches her annual $1,000 donation to the Center.

"I really appreciate Verizon's matching program," Sherrill said, noting that she also puts in enough hours of volunteer work with the Center to qualify for an additional $750 donation from Verizon.

In her work with the board, Sherrill has done a great deal of fundraising, and has also sought to attract the support of the business community and the community as a whole, raising awareness of domestic violence and its consequences.

"Domestic violence affects more than just the person being abused," Sherrill said. "It affects the community, it affects businesses, it affects everything. People in an abusive relationship need to seek help. They need to learn they can get out, that they can succeed in their lives."
